In a competitive market, a well written cv can considerably boost your chances of securing an interview.
Your cv is not just a description of your life and career history, it is a marketing tool which can highlight your suitability for a job and make you stand out from the competition.
It is our opinion that a cv is a personal document, there is no “one size fits all” way of writing your cv. The following is simply a guide of things to consider:
A CV must be:
- Honest – You will be asked to discuss your cv and provide examples of your skills / experience in an interview. It is vital that the content is correct.
- Accurate – Take time to spell check and proof read your cv to ensure there are no mistakes. Attention to detail is a competency that many employers value.
- Well Presented – Ensure that your cv looks neat and is clear and easy to read. Many jobs in IT require good documentation skills, this is your first opportunity to demonstrate this.
A good cv should contain:
- Contact Details – Include your name, address, phone numbers and email address.
- Profile – An introductory paragraph to summarise your experience and demonstrate that you have relevant skills to perform the role. Much recruitment is performed by email and the web and not all employers will request a letter of application. Your profile highlights why you are suitable for a job. This is part of your cv which you could tailor for each position.
- Career History – Written in reverse chronological order and with particular emphasis on your recent experience. For each job include:
- Employer,
- Dates worked,
- Job Title
- Details – this will include the project details and more importantly your responsibilities and achievements. A technical summary is a good idea.
- Education and Qualifications
- References – You can either include your referees’ details or simply put “available on request”.
- Interests – This is not an essential part of your cv but can give the document a personal touch. Be careful not to list so many interests that it looks as if you have no time left to work!
Much is written about how long your cv should be. The simple rule is that your cv should be both relevant and reflective of your experience. Remember that yours will be one of many cvs submitted to a job and think of the person who will read it.
